UPGRADE YO’ LYF
Every twenty-something woman secretly wants to be #instafamous: the type of girl that scores the fanciest room at the hotel, a business class upgrade on her long haul flight and the best seats in the house at that hot new restaurant. Unfortunately not all of us are Kendall Jenner, but follow these tips and you’ll be one step closer to feeling like a superstar…
- Look the Part
Dressing to impress is perhaps the most important rule of all. If you’re striving to score a free upgrade, being overdressed rather than underdressed is the aim of the game. When heading to the airport, pair skinny jeans with a simple tee and a tailored jacket and you’ve got a look that’s simple, classic and shows that you mean business. Ever seen Miranda Kerr step off a plane wearing trackies and uggs? No, neither have we. Save them to change into when you’re on the plane – even if they’re cashmere track pants and you spent $300 on them…Check-in attendants, maître d’s and hotel staff are much more likely to take you seriously if you look fabulous.
- Be Polite
Besides dressing like the #kween that you are, good manners will always come in handy. Everyone wants to be treated with kindness and respect, even if you’ve been waiting in a club line for 30+ minutes or have just stepped off a long haul flight only to find that the airline lost your baggage. Be polite to everyone and better yet – introduce yourself! A handshake and a smile go a long way in ensuring that you’re remembered. Strike up a conversation with the bouncer at your favourite bar and ask them how their night has been, or chat to your waiter about the menu items they’re loving. Next time you hit up that hot spot they’ll be much more likely to let you skip the queue!
- Assemble a #SQUAD
Everyone needs a squad, if only to make use of #squadgoals on Instagram (guilty!) Get together your group of best girlfriends and ensure they follow your lead when you’re trying to nab that free upgrade. A group of well-dressed, fun-loving gals are the ones who are going to spend money at the bar, so why wouldn’t staff want you at their establishment? Just make sure you’re not tequila’ed up when you try sweet-talking the bouncer: there’s nothing worse than being that drunk girl tripping over her stilettos.
- Share
In the age of social media, being an over sharer can sometimes come in handy. If you enjoyed that beautiful meal you just gorged on, post a pic of it to share with your followers and tag the restaurant! All businesses love receiving great reviews online, so you’re more likely to be welcomed back if you do so. Spread the love and the perks will come to you!
- Ask
If all else fails, there ain’t no harm in being upfront! What’s the worse thing that can happen? Ask the question and you might be politely rejected, or you could end up sippin’ champagne from your first-class seat…Sounds tempting to us!
