#INSIDE SCOOP: HIPPIE LANE AUTHOR, TALINE GABRIELIAN

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS

Loyal, determined, rebellious.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

With passion and dedication. It took me a long time to find my place in the workforce, always searching for the right fit. After working many jobs through my teens and twenties, I came to believe that finding one’s passion for work was elusive, and something that perhaps only a lucky few find. When I was faced with my personal journey to health, I found opportunity in adversity, where I discovered a newfound passion in all things health and wellness leading me to where I am today. I was able to merge my creative passion with my background in counselling and education to inspire people to be their healthiest self, beginning with beautifully presented and healthy recipes alongside motivational words and inspiration that are realistic and relatable.

CAN YOU GIVE US THE LOW-DOWN ON YOUR AVERAGE DAY…

Weekdays all look the same! I wake up around 6.30, get the kids ready for school, get breakfast going. Rush out for school drop off on foot, kiss kids goodbye, then I go for a walk/run for some happy highs and endorphins. I return home, make a smoothie, catch up on emails, attend meetings/appointments and return home for some recipe creating/photography and recipe writing. Then it’s back to school for pick up, home for dinner, homework and after school activities. So much on all the time! Thank god for the weekends which are far more cruisier.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIPPIE LANE? HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO WRITE IT AND WHO DO YOU VISUALISE READING IT?

It sort of happened naturally. I was faced with my own path to healing (approximately 7 years) where I learnt that I was sensitive to some common everyday ingredients – gluten, egg, dairy, refined sugar, and soy. I got experimenting with alternative natural ingredients and fell in love with the creative process and the delicious results. I launched Hippie Lane initially as a wholesale business, supplying my treats to cafes around town. It was received very warmly and the business grew organically from there. I had grown a strong following in the health community and the demand for my recipes spurred on the development of the Hippie Lane recipe app in 2015. Two years on I’m now launching Hippie Lane, The Cookbook!

My hope with the book is that it offers a starting point for many, not only those already health minded, but for the general population who want to go down the healthy road but feel it’s unattainable or unappealing. My recipes work and as you start experimenting and getting more experience in the kitchen, you’ll notice your confidence grows as your skills develop and you will surprise yourself on how simple and satisfying healthy can be.

I don’t promote any particular diets or deprivation / restriction. Hippie Lane is about an abundance of healthy natural wholefoods, where you choose to make healthy a priority which will then lead to a balanced well rounded lifestyle. There is a strong focus on beauty, food presentation and sharing delicious nourishing meals with family and friends. My recipes are favourites in my home and with my extended family and friends, with many inspired by my heritage, current health trends and childhood favourites.

THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN…

Be bold, honest and vulnerable even if it’s scary! I think authenticity is everything, professionally and personally.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IT TAKES TO BE A SUCCESSFUL FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR?

We women have so much pressure in today’s society, particularly mums who have to juggle work, their parenting responsibilities, withstand the pressure to look and feel amazing at all times, and to manage their relationships and health and do it all effortlessly! It’s unsustainable and unrealistic (and not to mention exhausting!)

I think we need to prioritise what is important based on our own personal and individual needs and not on the ideals of society. Once we can connect with our inner voice and tap into our inner wisdom, we can find some peace and discover what it is we really want and need for ourselves.

Once that is clear and you know where you want to be professionally, it’s time to set goals and strategies and dedicate our working hours to achieving them. A strong commitment is required and a passion to succeed. I don’t believe there are shortcuts!

WE ARE OBSESSED WITH YOUR INSTAGRAM!  HAS SOCIAL MEDIA PLAY A ROLE IN THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BUSINESS?

Thank you! Instagram has made an enormous impact on the success of my business. It’s my promotional tool and the place I connect with my followers daily, offering food and wellness inspo whilst making meaning connections with likeminded people worldwide. It is such a fabulous platform for marketing and promoting, where sky’s the limit with your potential reach.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO MID WEEK RECIPE?

Pesto Goddess Bowl is my quick and easy option when I’m short on time. Veggie Burgers are also a weekly fave as is my stuffed capsicums!

FAVOURITE CREATION TO DATE?

Ooh that’s a tough one. It took me record time to finally nail my take on the Wagon Wheel so it was the best 6 months of experimentation! My ‘Cart Wheel’ is one of my faves for sure. It’s amazingly delicious, and usually all snapped up by my hungry crew before I get a chance to have one for myself. Real life problems haha!

WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?

Eat well and eat mindfully. Limit processed food and refined sugars, reduce your reliance on animal products and choose foods that make you feel your best. Natural, unprocessed and from the earth is a great place to start. More plants and greens and less additives.  Be careful not to be too hard on yourself, don’t get caught up on labelling your eating style with strict do’s and don’ts and be flexible about your choices. An unrestricted and gentle approach to food is your best strategy to making healthy a lifestyle.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU ARE COMPLETELY STRICT ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR LIFESTYLE?

Through lots of trials, errors and successes, I have learnt that being strict or restrictive is counterproductive to living a balanced lifestyle. There are some activities and healthy habits that I think is really important if you wish to achieve a healthy lifestyle.  Choosing healthy when it comes to your daily diet – good proper nutrition through natural wholefoods – unrefined, unprocessed and whole.  Daily activity, whether that is a short run, swim, walk or resistance training. Indulge in what you love more often. Some personal favourites include music therapy (my necessity), time with friends and family, regular vacations, rest (descent sleep) and wellness therapy (meditation, yoga, massage, acupuncture).  If I’m feeling run down or struggling to find balance, I remind myself of these basics and find my rhythm once I’ve indulged in some of the above.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You know, I’m not sure! I know that I want some time to wind down after a crazy busy start to the year. And once I’ve had some rest and am ready for the next stage, I’ll let it flow. Just as Hippie Lane developed and evolved naturally and organically, I will continue on with a similar approach and look forward to seeing what comes next!
