HAIRSTYLES POST WORKOUT, HOW TO STYLE YOUR HAIR AFTER THE GYM, PE NATION

5 UNDER 5: POST WORKOUT HAIRSTYLES

WHAT YOU NEED IN YOUR GYM BAG…

  1. A brush: Of any description, your tangle teaser, your Mason Pearson or anything you have in between are just fine.
  2. A hair elastic: Any one will do, we are not fussy, just trying to avoid actual elastic bands, we tried and tested this for you and confirm that this will cause you much pain. Just don’t.
  3. Travel sized hairspray: To tame those pesky flyways, if you don’t get flyaway then you are a freak of nature and we congratulate you. Any will do, Priceline have a nice little selection on hand to save you lugging around your jumbo sized can.
  4. Hair Pins: No need for the fancy ballerina bun pins – whatever if lying around the centre console of your car or the bottom of your handbag are fine.
  5. The Holy Grail AKA Dry Shampoo – (no need to explain this one!)

BALLERINA BUN

This is a no brainer. By now you should have this mastered and if not shame on you. However, you are lucky you have friends like us to show you the ropes. There are absolutely zero excuses for not heading to your morning gym class with this sleek style as your ammo.

The first step is to brush your mane up into a high ponytail on the top of your head. There is no right or wrong here, play around a little bit until you find a height that best suits your face shape. Secure said ponytail with aforementioned hair elastic (not elastic band remember?). Spray head with hairspray and add a little bit onto your pony tail while scrunching it to give it some texture (If you are looking for a super super slick do then forgo the extra spray in your pony tail). Then twist your ponytail around and around on itself: the tighter the more polished, the looser the more ‘just came from the beach’ vibe. From here twist your hair around the hair elastic and secure with either a hair tie or bobby pins (You do you girl). Viola! Add some base, some mascara and red lip and you are work or play ready.

THE SLEEK PONY

Another slick-do perfect for work or anything really. Great if your go to is option 1 and people are starting to wonder if you EVER change it up or if your hair is permanently shaped into a ballerina bun form.

Start by brushing your hair and parting it on the side, somewhere between the top of your ear and the middle of your forehead usually does the job. From there, secure your hair at the nape of your neck with a hair elastic. Finishing the look by grabbing a 1 cm thick piece of hair from the bottom of your pony tail and wrapping it around your hair elastic to hide it (Ahem, because no one wants an exposed hair elastic, do they? Maybe they do but they definitely aren’t friends of ours) or alternatively, add an accessory as shown.

THE HIPSTER TOP KNOT

One of our all-time favourites. Best if you washed your hair a day or two ago with no hot yoga in between (because, gross – hot yoga sessions demand showers and hair washes…). This is a great style for the poker straight hair girls, the curly girls and the in between wavy beach gals.

First grab the blow-dryer at the gym and blast away any sweat, gross we know, but you had a good workout, wear that sweat with pride girl! Spray some dry shampoo at your roots and massage into the scalp. Next, grab the top third of your hair and backcomb a little with your brush, twist this section of hair around of itself into a mini bun and secure with a hair pin or two. Add some extra dry shampoo to the roots and ends for good measure, rough your hair up a little and BAM you are good to go. Perfect for Fridays in the office or date night.

THE TEXTURED PONY

If it’s good enough for Blake Lively, it is good enough for you. The best thing about this style is that the gym actually does it a favour, that sweat and heat give you the extra texture you need to create a perfect voluminous do.

We hate to repeat ourselves but repeat step one of the above – blast away that sweat scrunching your hair as you go. Once your hair is moisture free, apply dry shampoo to your roots and ends massaging it is as you go. From here, section the front half of your hair and slip it out of the way, pull the bottom half of your hair into a high ponytail and secure with a trusty hair elastic. Unclip the front section of your hair and pull it back to join the pony brushing your hair back as you go. Secure with another elastic and use the trick from option two to hide the hair elastic. Spray your pony with dry shampoo and lightly tease to add volume. To make sure it stays all day, spray a little bit a hair spray all over and you are DONE.

FRENCHIE BRAID

If you literally only have 2 minutes flat to get out of the gym, the side braid is your friend. Before getting in the shower apply dry shampoo to your roots and ends and put in a quick bun to keep it out of your way. The dry shampoo will absorb the excess oil while you are in the shower and make it easier to work with after – efficiency is key! Once you are out of the shower and dressed, roughly comb through your hair with your fingers (No brush required! We told you this was fast), scoop your hair to one side and loosely plait, letting bits fall around the face where they may. Secure with a hair elastic and you are out the door. If you don’t feel like hair around your face, loosely pin that fringe/fly-a-ways/ baby hairs back in their place.
